Nanny Teacher/Tutor

Alexandria, VA

Private Family is looking to hire an Experienced, Loving, Nanny TeacherTutor for their joyful 9-year-old in Alexandria, VA! - **Special Needs Experience Required!
**Open to Nannies, Teachers, Therapists (OT, Speech, Behavioral), or Caregivers with the right experience**

The Ideal Candidate: This family is seeking a compassionate and dedicated nanny to care for their delightful 9-year-old daughter who has Down Syndrome. She is high-functioning and can be quite independent with minimal guidance but must never be left alone. Your day will start with errands, light housekeeping, cooking, and/or laundry before picking her up from school around 2:45 PM. Afternoons with their daughter will vary, including taking her to gymnastics, setting her up with behavioral therapy at home, taking her to speech therapy outside the home, or planning other fun activities for her if the afternoon is free. Upon returning home, your responsibilities will include helping her with homework (if not already completed), helping with some tutoring (writing, math, life skills), assisting with bathing, and preparing for dinner.

What Works Best for the Family: They are looking for a nanny who embodies patience, energy, imagination, and quick thinking. Their daughter thrives on fun and novel activities, so they seek someone who can keep her motivated with engaging and creative ideas. Establishing a daily plan for her is essential to set her expectations from the start of each day.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Special Education and/or Special Needs: Ideal candidates include special needs nannies, teachers, tutors, and therapists (Occupational, Speech, or Behavioral) with relevant experience and/or certifications. It is requested that the nanny have experience taking care of a child with special needs or have a special education background either with certifications, training, or education.
  • Personality Traits: Their daughter is very funny, playful, and imaginative, and she loves to negotiate. The most successful caregivers have been those who can build a great rapport with her, and are playful, witty, energetic, patient, and quick on their feet.
  • Approach: Their daughter does not respond well to reprimands. The family relies heavily on positive reinforcement and would like for the nanny to focus on empowering their daughter and cultivating her confidence in her to be fully independent. They need someone who is gentle, uses positive reinforcement, stays neutral, and maintains a good temperament.
  • Tutoring and Life Skills: When possible, the nanny would include her in cooking, learning to do laundry, and expanding her executive functioning skills. The nanny will work with her BCBA (a resource for the family) to implement any behavior strategies as necessary. The nanny should help their daughter with tutoring as needed (e.g., writing, math) and assist in teaching her activities of daily living (ADLs) such as tying her shoes, bathing, and other basic life skills.

The family hopes to find someone who will not only support their daughter's daily routines but also bring joy and creativity to her life, helping her grow and thrive in every way. If you are passionate about making a positive difference in a child's life and meet the above qualifications, we would love to hear from you.
